THOR & STORM – GSD’S
PROBLEM – DOG AGGRESSION, AGGRESSION TO VISITORS AND GENERAL CONTROL
Gary and Britt rang, primarily about their three year old male Gsd Thor’s lunging at dogs and people, which was making him a nightmare to walk. Not only that, he was particularly threatening towards visitors to their home and was potentially having a negative effect on their bitch puppy Storm’s behaviour too.
It transpired that Thor had been chemically castrated and when I went to see them, it was fairly clear that when one examined the time-line, there was a fairly apparent link between the chemical castration and his deteriorating behaviour. Never the bravest of dogs in spite of his size, the neutering simply had the effect of reducing his confidence even more, hence his increasingly fearful aggressive behaviour. There was no way that Britt and Gary could wait six months for the chemical castration to wear off and we set about making changes in his behaviour. At the same time, I realised that they had an even bigger challenge on their hands with their puppy Storm, as she was becoming increasingly headstrong and yet had none of the fear issues of her older mate. Britt and Gary were not the most confident of handlers, so much work was done with both of them to increase their confidence and handling ability, which has led to them having much more control over their two lovely Gsd’s.
" We just wanted to let you know how very grateful we are to you for helping us with our ‘terrible two’! First of all the big man Thor. Funny to be named after the God of Thunder and yet he dives under a table for cover when he hears it!
We can’t thank you enough for taking the time to show us how to deal with Thor and his lunging and growling at every dog he passed. We were really at our wits end and being such a powerful dog as you know, it was impossible for me to control him. The day we walked him around the Quay with you and I had to take the lead, I was so nervous but with you there guiding me all the way, it was just so wonderful being able to just walk past other dogs and people, plus of course that angry swan!
Thor was so relaxed as was I and it was something I thought I would never be able to do again. His confidence has steadily grown and he seems less fazed by noises now too. He is so much better when people call at the house too and we will definitely be keeping up with the training methods which have been brilliant.
Storm was supposed to have been along for the ride wasn’t she, but we were so glad that you identified the early signs of her rebellious behaviour, so that we could nip it in the bud. I have found Storm’s sessions with Jayne invaluable and will continue to meet up with her for refreshers when ever I can.
Thanks again Peter. i am so glad I came across your website and my only regret is that I didn’t find you sooner. Gary and I always comment on the way home from our sessions with you, how you handle these dogs. As they say, you either have it or you don’t – and you most certainly do! Best wishes,"
