PROBLEMS-
NONE. JUST RESPONSIBLE OWNERS TRYING TO START OFF IN THE RIGHT WAY.
Claire and Chris, the owners of Lupus a 10 week old
Rottweiler puppy which had been born in a major animal shelter, called me to ask
for assistance in ensuring that the early weeks of their relationship with Lupus
were properly managed in order that he develops into a balanced, sociable dog.
Claire in particular had previous experience in
German Shepherds so was no new-comer to the guarding breeds, and I found it
extremely refreshing that they were taking such positive steps before any
problems had shown themselves. If only all new Rottweiler owners were so
responsible!
Lupus was a typical puppy male with no problems
whatsoever. Advice was given on house training, feeding and the fundamentals of
early obedience which certainly can and should be started at the earliest
opportunity. The emphasis was on setting clear rules, boundaries and limitations
for their puppy and being able to recognise any symptoms of potential
behavioural traits before they develop.
Puppies are so receptive to early setting of
these rules, boundaries and limitations as they can be made fun for the puppy.
My rules basically are - no unearned affection/treats or rewards. This may seem
hard on a young puppy, but if you think about it what could be easier? Instead
of just cuddling him for the sake of it, get him to come to you when called or
to sit when asked and then give him lots of praise and affection.A great way to demonstrate effective
leadership - which is exactly what the puppy needs and wants.
Practice the same methods when giving his food.
Ensure he earns it by coming when called to his dish. Grooming at this early age
also plays a key role in establishing the owners as his leaders and I always
recommend that this be done immediately before a meal, which is a reward for his
standing for his grooming session. Easy - but lots of puppy owners of all breeds
don't know about these basics. Further sessions are planned in a month's time,
but for now Claire and Chris are on the right path to rewarding Rottweiler
ownership.
"Thanks Peter. We have never owned a Rottweiler
before and we so much want to do everything right. Your advice and the action
plan are a great help and Chris has already started getting Lupus to sit for
his meal so hopefully he will get there!" Claire.
