DANGEROUS DOGS ACT As an ex Police Inspector, I am well aware of the evidential requirements for conviction of these and similar offences. Unfortunately, I am only too aware that owners can find themselves reported for summons on the flimsiest of evidence, often by inexperienced officers lacking knowledge of the DDA itself and certainly lacking any knowledge of dog behavioural issues. Once these wheels are set in motion, despite the independence of the CPS, cases find themselves before a court and convictions can swiftly follow, particularly where defendants are not represented and plead guilty without considering all the issues. On request, I will conduct an assessment on behalf of the owner or their legal representatives of any dog which is the subject of criminal proceedings under the Dangerous Dogs Act or other legislation. I will provide a written statement of evidence of my findings and will attend court to give evidence as an expert witness if required. (Charges apply. Available on request). If you are unfortunate enough to be the subject of criminal proceedings in such a matter, the evidence of a witness such as myself may make the difference between the court making a destruction order on your dog, or not. If you are in this position, you should discuss the possibility of an independent assessment of your dog, with your legal representative as soon as possible. I hasten to add that I am not one of these people who is interested in exploiting loopholes in the law to see owners and their dogs acquitted of offences that have clearly been committed. I will though, examine all mitigating circumstances in any case and where a dog clearly deserves a second-chance I will do my utmost to assist in preventing a destruction order wherever possible. Please note that I cannot work miracles, although some owners whose dogs I have trained actually think I can! If you and your dog are subject to criminal proceedings, then in assessing your dog I will provide an open, transparent and honest summary of its behaviour as I see it. |
