NIPPER – JACK RUSSELL
“He’s Nipper by name, not by nature”, said his owner when she first asked me to walk this elderly Jack Russell terrier.
Mmm, not quite correct I found on a few occasions when I tried to dry him after wet weather.
Nipper was a bit of a grumpy old man who didn’t have much time for other dogs, but most of all quite simply detested any postal worker.
Not only when the delivery person came to his home, but also when Nipper spied them on their rounds when out walking.
He would become very fixated and aggressive and would make a bee-line for them even if they were across the street or a hundred metres in front.
On one occasion he ran out of his owners house, across the street and backed a post lady into a doorway, where she fended him off with her bag.
This post lady has previously been bitten by another dog whilst on her rounds, so is understandably somewhat apprehensive when dogs behave in this way.
“This dog chased me across the street and into a doorway a few months ago! I can’t believe the difference in him!” – Jenny – Post Office delivery
NIPPER AND POSTWOMAN JENNY – ALL SMILES NOW!
After just a couple of sessions, Nipper was cured of this aggressive, anti-social behaviour, certainly
in public. Again, some well-timed, firm interruption stopped him in his tracks and a few minutes later we were accompanying the postman on his rounds. This complete turn around in his behaviour has continued and whenever we meet a postal worker in the street, his behaviour is impeccable. He still barks when
the post man/woman deliver to his home and his owner is slowly being convinced that we need to make that the next item on our agenda for Nipper!!
As can be seen from the photos, this is a changed dog. No need for an asbo for Nipper!
“Nipper, what a name! When I first saw him he used to bark and snarl like a mad thing whenever I was in sight. He’s so much better now, it’s amazing.” – Gary, Post Office delivery
